Are "off shore" tapping heads worth owning?

I'd wonder if at least you could get a shorter R8/MT3 adapter. The image here looks way shorter than yours which might buy ~3 inches back: https://www.amazon.com/Shank-Drill-Chuck-Adapter-Sleeve/dp/B07NYN26DX

I couldn't find sufficient documentation on this one to see if it is replacable, but a handful of the ones I looked at were actually JT33 with an adapter.
Now that I TYPE that, I was able to find this manual :) https://www.sterlingmachinery.com/media/brochures1/file/procunier-tapping-and-drilling-brochure.pdf

It DOES look like the arbor is screwed in, however the exploded view does make it seem like it would be easy enough to turn a replacement in a straight shaft.

I originally considered calling the factory (now owned by Createch Machine and Design), but assumed even if the shank was swappable it would be prohibitively expensive.

But I was pleasantly surprised when I called their customer support today and was told a straight 3/4in replacement shank was $110, and it includes some required parts.

Now I'm awaiting a call from their tech support to learn if there are any gotchas.

I'm also investigating having the MT3 shank turned to straight 3/4in as Matt and others have suggested, or turning a new one as Erich suggested, once I were to get it out. I'm a relative newbie.

In any case I'm going to test the tapper out first before I sink any more money into it.

I have sold a number of Procunier tapping heads on eBay. I disassembled all of them to make sure they were in good condition and going to work. They are very simple pieces of equipment. If the cork "clutch" is in good shape and not covered with oil, you are probably good to go.
You also got one of the bigger Procuniers that I have seen. I think mine were 1-E and 2-E sizes.

Yeah, I didn't need one this big, a 2-E would have been more appropriate for my typical application. But it was local, included collets and the price was right.
