Anyone ever know or hear of someone adding an optics mount to an AR7 ?

Hello,

I have 3 of these, The first one I purchased 35 years ago, and the last one 10 years ago.. Never even took it out of the box....Wolfe I believe.

I cannot imagine why you would want to put optics on this weapon. It would defeat the purpose of it being a "survival tool". You cannot fit any optics into the stock for carrying. It would be very cumbersome to attach to the barrel. There is not much to the barrel.

I can tell you that it is a decent gun for what I paid for them, I have less than 300 dollars tied up in all of them combined.

I know what it is called ... but really... would you want to take this into battle with anything larger than a groundhog?

I guess I really did not answer the question... so... No, I do not know of anyone who would build optics for this gun...

I wish you luck with it... I think you would be better off getting the new Ruger 10/22 break down... that is more of a gun and the accessories are abundant.

I wish I could answer you. I had one several years ago and it was stolen. Fun little gun to have, and a great backpack or survival rifle. Been sort of looking for one, but only ones I find people want too much for.

I would have to agree though, in general. Open sites would seem more appropriate, considering the type of gun it is.

An interesting thought - I've been considering how to add (when needed) a scope to my Springfield M6 Scout combo as well. It's not a bad shooter as-is, but my eyes could use a little help, and I thought about sticking a red dot on a QD mount of some sort.

It might be interesting to adapt an AK-74 side mount to the gun. That mount actually locks up pretty securely but attaches and detaches very quickly. It is a bit cumbersome though. Maybe take the dovetail bits off it and mount them to the top of the receiver. Or just attach a short length of Picatinny rail and be done with it.

I'm not sure why you'd want to (the basic "peep" sight on mine has worked well for the last 40 years or so) but it has been done. The first time I saw one with a sight was in the movie "From Russia with Love":

Googling it has turned up a number of scoped AR-7s...

FWIW - I'd have to go look at it but I believe mine was made under the Armalite label. This design has bounced around quite a bit. At present it is back at Henry.

I had one and milled the top of it and mounted a Picatinny rail to it and the then added a Red Dot sight.
Only thing is it will not fit in stock after this.
In my case I also added a detachable Telescoping Stock to it so it was not an issue for me.
Have since sold the gun and unfortunately don't have any pictures.

I remember looking at those, but I ended up buying a Marlin Papoose instead... a much better made gun. I had a scope on the Marlin at one point. The receiver has grooves for the scope and it fits [barely] in the case with the scope attached.

I found an AR-7 at a friend's pawn shop. I got for $20 bucks. It was missing the the cocking handle, magazine and one other part. A quick call to Numrichs yielded all the missing pieces. My father in law is a Vietnam vet and told me this rifle was designed as a survival weapon. He seemed to like it more than me so I gave it to him. He enjoys shooting it but his eye sight is getting bad so we installed a 1X4 scope on it. We had to use 3/8 dovetail 1" scope rings which are available anywhere. So if you're not attempting to be dropped off in the middle of a jungle anytime soon, mounting a scope is no big deal. Sure a scope takes away from the intended stowing capacity but it's likely you'll leave it in a deployed state anyway. One other thing, it seems to me that assembling it and disassembling it excessively will wear the screw threads in the receiver rapidly. Just my opinion.

I just took a 1/4" thick as wide as the top strap of CRS and cut a groove for scope mounts. Mounted it with 2 screws to top strap. Just make sure screws aren't too long.
