Anyone have plans for target holders?

My wife and I just joined one of the local gun clubs and on some of the (outdoor) ranges a person needs to supply their own target holders (paper targets for the most part). Now before I go and "re-invent the wheel" I thought I'd see if anyone had any interesting designs for them.

Thanks,

Our club has 2" PVC in the ground at most lanes and we just carry in firring strips and spring clips, works good.
Otherwise we have metal bases made of rebar and 1x2 box steel that the firring strips fit into the box, same spring clips to hold cardboard and targets.

I use one of these. It has 2 tines in the bottom that stick into the ground.
I use old pizza boxes for the cardboard.

If you have an old pitch fork you could probably make a better one.

In in a few weeks stick in the ground election posters will be fair game. Them and old real estate signs make great target holders. I just tell people to remove or cover the poster for the candidate. Someone sees you shooting a picture of a politician they may not understand that you are just using it as a backstop.

Plant a tree at about 7 yards from the line, wait 25 yeas, than you'll have a great target holder. It won't blow in the wind either!

A lot of people use PVC target holders but they shatter if hit. I'd make them out of wood, a little heavier so it won't blow over and lasts over repeated hits in the same spot.

This is the same idea as ours, but rebar scrap is plentiful and you can double or tripple up for weight.

Those Jammit stands look interesting. I was thinking of something with a little more adjustment to the height though. Things like political signs and realty signs are a bit problematic at the range, to my understanding anyway. The end of the ranges are protected by large berms. If one is shooting, standing up, at a realty sign 100 yds out on a 300 yd range (they have 100 yd, 300 yd, and 600 yd ranges) the bullet drop will cause the round to hit the ground and possibly ricochet instead of becoming buried in the berm. To alleviate this problem a target system would have to be somewhat adjustable for the different shooting positions and ranges.

I like the idea of steel and wood and can maybe think of a couple of ways to make them height adjustable. I like the weight factor of the pvc but that has a couple of drawbacks that make it less than ideal. The light weight being it's big advantage is also a disadvantage in an outdoor environment, especially around here where the wind seems to be gusting 24/7/365 :(. PVC also doesn't seem to hold up well in UV light or when excessive lead is applied. ;) We used to use a pvc paper holder/target when I was heavily involved in archery to help "tune" the arrow flight. Even in doors and with arrows they had their issues with constant use.

I guess another big issue I have to consider is my wife. (Don't get me started there. - jk) As she will be going to the range on her own/with friends any target holder system built will have to be easy to transport, set up, and use on the range (as well as adjustable). Hmmm, it's starting to sound like a pretty tall order there. :headscratch:

Oh, and just as an FYI here are what the ranges look like - http://engc.us/tour/

Thanks guys,

Consider googling on Texas Star Target plans. Perhaps more than you are looking for?

Those are cool as all get out. I've just added one to my list of things to make.

Unfortunately, that still doesn't fall in to the category of something the wife can set up and handle.

Thanks for the extra project ;)

Nice looking range. As far as the target stands. Many of our guys drive smaller cars, they cut the firring strips in half and use a carriage bolt and wing nut to fold the strips to shorter size. Quick and easy. Perhaps the club will help foot the bill for the bases? They buy the material and you weld up a bunch... then store them at the club and just transport the sticks and targrts?

I made this one out of PVC...

Place a couple of sandbags on the base and it works great...
