like a famco#4, and if you do, how much do you use it, and are you in the selling mood? Currently looking for one that not beat to snot with busted casting. wondering which is best and what i should fork out (remember that i am very very cheap).

toag--too bad you don't live in minnesota--I've got 5 larger arbor presses ---some needing parts made, but no busted castings--the smaller two are #3s and I have a very large atlas and a foot model famco---what is your price range to help sellers know if they might be interested in parting with one ?----Dave----

Hmm... I know Minnesota is lovely this time of year, but I'd rather vacation there during you 8 days of summer  . But I have traveled to kenosha for stuff before. what do these run I'd like to spend less than $600 (is that low or crazy). there is a greenerd no5 standing model about an hour awayfor $325 but the counterweight is busted off, and I dont know about tbe rest of it. Would like at least 12-16 throat. standing types are preferred (would look great between the shaper and lathe), as bench space is always a premium

Dave,
I've rebuilt a turn of the century 3ton(?) arbor press from the "Faribault Machine Shop and Foundry " she works very well!
However, I have frequently wished she was larger.
As you know I don't mind projects. If you have one which needs help, at a price that I can talk my wife into.
Well.......
I believe I owe you from our last trade, as I've been using much of the tooling, and I don't know that you've had the same benefit from the Hermes.

Toag, I'll be traveling to Iowa in December (day to be determined) if any of Dave's presses work.
Note: I get first pick ;).

Daryl--I think you would like the atlas---I will get some pictures of it sent to you and you can view them when you come down in Dec.---you don't owe me any from our last trade cause I'm thinking how I can use the Hermes in my small shop. then you can let Toag know what the Famco foot press is worth. ---Dave---

I have a Famco 25R that is almost permanently attached to my arm, it is probably the most used tool in my shop. I picked up up many years ago while still in millwright school.

Phoned about an add in the local buy and sell, asked if he would hold it until I got off school for the day or did I have to come right out and owner promised to hold it until I got there. When I got there at just after 4 as I had discussed with him, sure enough it was still there sitting in the middle of his wood pile. When I asked if his price was negotiable, he held up a list of names and numbers as long as my arm, with my name and number at the top. Seems there was lots of interest in it. I paid the man the money he asked and loaded it into the trunk of my Valiant. Swore I had power steering all the way home.

The press came without a stand so I welded up one using 3 x 3 angle iron, and sized it to what I figured was a comfortable height when my arm was up and holding onto the lever. After a few years, I added extensions under the feet of the stand to raise the height of the press to the same height as the workbench. At the same time, I added a "foot" that stuck out from the stand under the ram, this way, if I have long items, I can press against the foot. I have found this arangement a much better height.

The Famco 25R is a 5 Ton ratchet lever press. It has a 12" height and a 12-1/2" depth. I have rarely ever had a concern with the depth, but often wish the height was a bit higher. The other concern is the opening under the ram is 3-3/16" and that is often just a bit small, especially for induction motors.

Overall, if you can get your hands on an arbour press do so and get the largest size you can.

Oh and then comes all the press sleeves you can get your paws on, they really help to have a good selection.

Tentative plan big picture plan, with many details to flush out.
I'm planning on purchasing some Cincy Mill vises from usajsb2.
He lives in Spring Valley Illinois. But, travels to Iowa for work.
Roughly this would get the press 1/2 way to Marysville.

What if I stop in Rochester MN (Dave shop) pick up both presses, travel to Iowa, pick up the vises, load Toags press onto usajsb2 truck and he takes her to Spring Valley. I've not yet asked usajsb2 if he has a vehicle to ruck a press, nor do I know if he is willing. Additionally, we need to confirm that size and condition would work for us. Given Daves history, I expect that Dave will be fair with a price.

Toag is the concept workable for you?
If so, then we should ask usajsb2 if he will consider the adventure and what he would charge.
Each of us should feel comfortable saying no to the venture at any time, for any reason.
Dave if this happens. You are welcome to travel with me to Iowa. I'd enjoy your company.

The HGR option is also a good one. Great place! And possibly closer to Toag.
However, not quite as much fun for me as playing a role in making this happen.
