Another Newbee, looking for advise

Terry & the rest who have added to my question, I'd like to say wow, you guys have tought me just how much I need to learn, just as Ruben said. I will look on youtube, I have seen some very interesting videos already. My first thing I want to figure out is how to work the threading formula. (no laughing)

Hello again, I have a maybe silly question, on my Logan 820, that third leg, what is the correct or best postion for it?
Does it have to be square so to speak? Does the top of the belt cover have to be level?

Bill,

I would recommend that you start off with HSS bits that you grind yourself. Download a copy of Southbend's "How to Run A Lathe". If you Google it you will find it. It is what would today be called "Lathes for Dummies". It contains very good information for the beginner. Also, Google Tubal Cain or Mr. Pete. He has many, many YourTube videos that are full of information - including how to grind HSS tools.

Keep reading. Don't look for the quick answer.

The book in paper form is also available on Amazon for 5.30. Best 5 bucks you will spend for educational text. The Workshop series is also a very good text and I have several of them currently. I am hoping to obtain the entire series over time so I will have a complete reference library to look through. All of them are great bedtime on the nightstand reading. I just read till I fall asleep, and go back to where I remember to start the next time I pick it up. You end up reading the book several times, but it really plants it in your mind well and it will remain there indefinitely. So good luck, and welcome to the gang. As you have already seen, there are a ton of your fellows available to help, all you need do is ask.

sorry cant help you there, my Wards/Logan don't use one.
want to add, tubalcain's videos are the best. He got me back up to to speed on threading.
Can't say I'm real good at it, esp. the Threading Dial. This last little threading project happened to be 24 TPI where in multiples of 8, ( 8,16,24,32,) you do not need to use the threading dial.

At the end of my thread "best QCTP for logan", if you didn't see it, shows the T nut I did using the lathe, a hack saw and a belt sander. If you got the Phase II, that Is a 14 mm X 1.5 thread.

I just adjust it so it's level. Once you have it where you want it, adjust the cover and the belt tension. The hinge pins on the cover are eccentric to give you adjustment fore and aft.

One more thing on the LH bits. You can build a boring bar, and that's the style used in them. So definitely don't feel bad about having them. They are also used for facing. Plenty handy.

You'll need a silicon carbide grinding wheel to handle them. Don't waste your Alox wheel. It won't work. A diamond wheel is often a benefit on getting a smoother, sharper edge, which in turn produces better finish on the work.

OK Thanks Tony, silicon carbide grinding wheel,
You know I am still sick over it. better than 10 years ago, at an auction, there was one of those carbide grinders, with the 2 tables on the ends, a good one. Didn't really know what it was, of if I'd use it or what I'd use it for. So I didn't bid on it. No one was really bidding on it. But It went for like $30.00.
