An Unusual Project

Turning the round section wouldn't be that difficult, but if your making the part from mild steel you'll end up with a grade 2 threaded section. That may be fine for the application, but I'd probably go the two piece route and use a section from a grade 5 or 8 bolt just to get the harder threads,

Thanks guys - I appreciate the input. I had not condsidered the thread strength issue - I wonder how big a deal that will be. I also agree the 2 iece approach would likely be easier but not as mch fun/learing experience.

Rick , do you have a mill ? 2 options if so . Rotary table or mount in vise and turn the diameter with a boring head .

Well I decided to try the one piece method - it was actually pretty simple. Squared up a rectangle in the mill, centered it in the 4 jaw and went at it.

I still need to locate the pivot hole. I was a little off on the dimensions - overall length is OK but the threaded section is a little short. I should be able to correct that by dropping the pivot hole a bit. Now to come up with a bed clamp plate.

Thanks for your suggestions

Good job!

In my experience, the third piece is the best... :dunno:
