Advise on turning 4 inch rod?

I have a second piece I tried and it's not quite as hard. I have a small propane forge that I build that I'm going to put the last two pieces in and heat them. I almost forgot that I had the forge, we desized and it's been in the trunk of my old car.

Since there aren't too many affordable thermometers that register up to these high levels, here's a color chart that may be helpful. Viewed on my computer, it looks fairly close to what things look like when you open the oven door. http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/tempering-colors-steel-d_1530.html

Also, if you look at post #33 of this thread http://www.hobby-machinist.com/showthread.php/9929-Heat-Treat-Oven?highlight=heat+treat+oven and look at the oven, I'll take a basic guess those parts are at/around 1550.

If you have ever used the trunk of an old car to store your forge...... you might be a hobby-machnist!:roflmao:

I'm familiar with heat treating, I've forged knives in the past. It may be a while till I get to this. Too many projects at home and we're short handed at work for the entire summer.
