AAAARRRRGGGG - dropped TDI to it's end

Pretty sure he meant Dial Test Indicator. A little more delicate than a ADG Group 2 travel indicator.

I dropped 2 Brown & Sharpe Calipers in one day both know working like they should. won't read the same twice and its like there is swarf in themPaul

I have a tdi and two dti's With a 46 mile drive to work the tdi saves me a fortune. The brown and sharp dti's make my job easier.

Sears USED to sell some good stuff. I used a Craftsman dial caliper (my first) for a number of years. It survived being dropped several times on hard floors before it finally quit. Haven't dropped any since then, though.

I kind of favor my Best-Test indicators. I've only had two over the years. One just stopped reading one day while sweeping in a swiveling table on a large horizontal. I thought I had just hit the sweet spot....then I backed away and it still didn't move. I took it apart and the main shaft had broken. Still can't figure out how, exactly. It was good for about 15 years though, so I probably did some damage early on that I had forgotten.. Replaced it and still have that one in use all the time. I have a Last Word and don't like it at all, so it sits. A couple of Mitutoyo's and they just sit. And others that just sit.....hmm, must really like the B&S black face. Also have a sack of dead ones and parts donors. One of my pastimes in the shop was fixing peoples stuff. Have a lot of basket cases that turned donor.

One day I'll go ahead and get an Interapid. Best one I ever borrowed.

I have to say though, the little devils seem to take a lot and not complain much. One day it was setup on the lathe and I cranked the wrong way on the crossfeed sending it into the work piece instead of way from it. -Bonked it pretty good and figured it was curtains. To my delight, the probe is connected via a friction fit slip collar. I just put a cringe on my face and slipped it back to position. -Happy (and lucky) camper that day.

Do you ever think about all the thought and refinement that must have gone into those things over the years? Amazing little devices.

That's why it pays to orient them in such a way that if you do happen to move the wrong direction, the mount method is not totally rigid and will allow the indicator to be pushed out of harms way. Think ahead.

heh.... yes Dial Test Indicator. my ride is just fine. :lmao:

I guess it's time to open up that patient and do some surgery, worst case I'll have some spare hardware to play around with.
