Hello guys, I hope all is well. I just have a question regarding Chuck jaws in general. I have a 6” 3 jaw enco chuck I assume originally came with my 12 x 36 enco lathe. The only jaws I have are the inside jaws. Question is can I buy a set of outside jaws for this chuck or are they specific to this particular chuck? I see that grizzly sells a set for the 9249 lathe but I’m not sure if they will fit this enco chuck. Am I pretty much just stuck with what I have? Also would it just be cheaper or better to buy a new chuck that will have a set of outside jaws? Thanks in advance

I wouldn't put money on the jaws being identical. There are too many critical dimensions that have to be right on. That said, if you can find someone with the Grizzly chuck to make accurate measurements, or better yet, try them on your lathe, it could work out.

One piece jaws for 6" 3 jaw chucks look similar but the devil is in the dimensions.
If you post an accurately dimensioned sketch of what you have, in the Tooling and Accessories Wanted sub-forum, you might get lucky.
Be sure to include the apparent pitch of the scroll threads.
At a minimum, arrange with the seller that they can be returned if they don't fit properly.

That’s kind of what I was afraid of. Figured there would be different dimensions on the grizzly jaws. I may just look into getting a 8” 3 jaw with outside jaws. That should handle anything I need. I can always step up to my four jaw if need be however for quick setup I would like to have a decent 3 jaw

I have looked for replacement jaws for a six jaw buck chuck. I finally came to the conclusion that the only way I would find a set was to go through the pile of jaws some of the used machine dealers have , after paying to return two sets of jaws. They may be possible to match , if you have more patience than I do. I bought a new chuck finally.

The odds of finding the proper jaws are slim to none. I have an older 5" Union chuck missing the outside jaws. I've been looking for over 20 years to find those jaws. I've been to at least two dozen different used machine tool dealers and sorted through literally thousands of sets. As of this point in time I've not found what I need.

Your time would be better spent looking for a good deal on a chuck with reversible top jaws. Much better chance of success.

I would almost guaranty going from one mfg to another they will not even be close.

However I did find that between two of my Prazi chucks SN189 and SN264 the jaws were identical in fit, and runout when installed was less than .002. That may even be reduced with some tinkering but it OK as is.

I only mention this as it completely surprised me that the unused outside jaws from an older chuck fit my brand new chuck so well. Whether this is true of other manufacturers IO have no idea.

Not sure if this is a direct link, but CDCO has a 6" reversable jaw chuck for $169.

ETA: Not a direct link. Go to machine tooling, lathe tooling, then its halfway down the page.

Thank you to everyone who has responded. Definitely sounds like I’m in the market for a new chuck. As is I can’t clamp 6” round stock if I needed to. Will need to find a good backing plate for whatever I find. My spindle is threaded 2 1/4-8 tpi so that shouldn’t be hard to find. I will check out CDCO I don’t believe I have ever dealt with them. New sources are always welcomed. Again, thank you guys for educating me in the world of lathe chuck jaws. Had no clue if that stuff was in anyway standardized
