Hi,

I have an old milling machine and I need to machine a 24in cover to surface it, like 1 inch from the external edge . I find a 14in manual rotary table and I would like to know if someone have experience with mounting bigger parts on smaller rotary table. If I take very small cut do you think it will work ?

Best regards

Philippe

What is your concern, the mounting hardware or the table it’s self?

The table will be fine, you may have to drag one of the table locks to counter torque from the end-mill depending on its orientation, and the direction you turn the table.

May be more work than you want to do, but you could make a clamp fixture with two roller bearings that the piece will travel through and clamped to the mill table. As you rotate the rotary table it would help prevent chatter.
Hopefully you get the picture of what I’m talking about?

It takes very light cuts. Chatter and raggedness are the punishment for going too fast with such a setup. A backing plate would probably help, but at 24" dia, any serious thickness will add considerably to the weight on the table.

The concerne is about the rotary table itself. I just want to figure how the table can take with bigger parts on it.

Moore made table extensions which just bolted to the rotary table and then there was a t-slot on the outer extension on one side. They are hardened and ground and as accurate as everything Moore made. I took a couple of pictures of what I'm talking about. The idea should probably be transferable if you wanted to make your own.

Love the Moore stuff. I haven’t found a set of table extensions for mine yet.

The table should be more than adequate. Here I have a 24 inch pulley set up on my I think 8 inch table. Had to reduce the dia to let the next smaller size belt section protrude for a bandsaw mill. Set up a gear motor to spin it smoothly.
