Last couple of days i've been working on the little Lada, working on smaller jobs first of which was mounting the trunk lid and drilling, tapping and installing gas struts, i had to modify the mounting holes to accept the new style ball mounts, this left me with a empty workbench, so i got the dashboard on there to work on fixing it, i've had no luck in finding a new dashboard so i'm using body filler to fill the holes and plan to use bedliner to apply a textured coat over it. I may need to start more than one job at a time because the body filler seams to take long time to harden, probably because of the cold.

PS - if the body filler isn't too smelly, you might want to take the dashboard indoors to cure.

Things that I have accomplished today.....
Installed my new set of parallel keepers. Ok, they are just springs.

Started making my wifes present. She made me promise not to buy her anything. She didn't say not to make anything. It will be finished tonight come hell or high water. More on this when its done.

And I took my blood pressure. Might be time to call my Dr.

I didn’t make this today, but it was for Christmas presents. I machined up coasters for presents this year for some close friends and family. Here is Part 1

Today i had very little time to spare, but i did get my hands dirty, i decided to do some mechanical work on the engine, with the radiator removed i have great access to the front belt drive, i know the water pump is leaking so it needs changing, also the alternator is not charging an is the old style with external regulator so it needs to go as well, to get better access i first removed the shields from under the engine, they have some surface rust so i'll clean them up and undercoat them, but the surprise come in the water pump, it is the original one that this car left the factory with, i found the date and is from 1981, this confirms that this little 4x4 has only 57 000 km. Here, i'll be doing couple of modifications first of which i will not be running the mechanical radiator fan, also i'll be making some more room and i'll be using the biggest radiator i can fit and twin electric fans also i may install a A/C condenser up front also i be using a updated water pump to help with the cooling, i'm sure in Russia at - 50 celsius this cooling system works fine but here is insufficient.

I was able to finish my throw lever tonight. It came out the way that I planned, but I would do a few things differently if I made another one. I would make it more petite for one. It needs to be pretty tough. The rifle does get deposited into a dump barrel rather hastily.
The power ring is much easier to turn with a lever on it. Some stages could have targets from 5 yards and out as far as 350 yard at one of the clubs I go to.

Not the best knurl I've ever made but defiantly the smallest. Thats a 6-32 thread sticking out the end.


Im building a model steam engine. This locks the control handle in forward or reverse.
Will post some pictures when I get a moment.

After more than fifty years I've finally come to the realization that I am destined to forever remain the 98-pound weakling on the beach. Charles Atlas is just not in my cards, period! So I was some disappointed when even the thrift store would not accept my practically unused weight set that had been gathering dust in various parts of the house. What to do with the stupid things now?

The rejected bar ended up back the house, and as I was starting to break the thing down for scrap I looked at the two end collars sitting on the bench. Just crude cast iron things that stop the weights from sliding of the end as you crumple under the strain, but wait a minute. They look kind of like.....



So went to my stock rack and pulled out a length of 1-1/4" round 1018, cut two lengths and threaded them for 18 teeth per inch. And after a little boring on the two cast collars I threaded them for 18 teeth per inch as well. Oddly, I hit the sizes on the money and the fits were really nice.




Two more pieces of round, some more turning, and then to the press.



And you were right, they do look a bit like jumbo machinist jacks!
