2017 POTD Thread Archive

I suspect this one may be a different issue because it's not even showing up in Tapatalk.

I salvage a bunch of stuff to make some grinder stands, yesterday a friend and I welded them all together. He's a better welder than me and he offered to do it for me so I let him. His welder at his shop has some major power for welding to this heavy cast. Oh by the way, all the materials for this build where salvaged and free $0.

So this is what I started with, some salvaged semi brake drums, and 5 inch 1/4 wall square tube.

All off this stuff was extremely rusted, one of the shops I frequent for work sandblasted them for me at no cost. See, doing favors for people does come back to you. Good karhma!

Flipped again and welding the top plate down.

Full weld all the way around.

Tacking the post on.

Burning the post on.

My buddy adjusting the heat on the welder, he turned it down a little for the 1/4 inch plate. He used higher heat to weld the heavy cast iron.

The top plate welded on. I would have liked a little larger plate but this is what I could find in the scrap bin at work.

Voila!! Three grinder stands that cost me nothing. Heavy and stable yet can be rolled around on edge. The semi brake drums alone weigh 90 to 100 lbs. I may make one of them able to quick change different grinders with plates attached to them.

This will be the grinder wall in my basement metal shop. The wood shop is on the other side of the wall.

All I have to do is paint them. That will be my only cost.

3 stands for free. Just a little work.

Looking down my basement stairs into what is becoming the metal shop. If I need to get lumber into the wood shop I can just move a grinder or 2 out of the way.

Not MY shop but at work the machine shop is MINE to maintain as well as use.
Had an issue with our Landis Cylindrical Grinder. The operator had to use the 4 jaw chuck instead of using centers which is how we normally grind. The jaws were bell mouth by about 0.010". I squared them up on the surface grinder knowing that there was more wrong than just this. Reinstalled the jaws and did more checks. The chuck is original to the machine and is very worn but serviceable. On closing up the jaws on some large round stock, we had about 0.050" total taper once tightened, fortunately the wear is fairly even on the 4 keyways, so back to working the jaws. I set up to remove a total of 0.025" off the inside vs 0 at the top. Using plain old dial indicator, milling vise and shims to set up and did some grinding. Back to the Landis, and now the jaws close up properly and a much happier operator.

Nice, to make it quick change cut the plate off and put a nice edge on it, Then drill a hole and on each side and weld a nut on This way you can use a piece of thick wall on a plate to attach various grinders etc, slip them in and then tighten them down. Make a mount somewhere on a wall or something with angle slots so you can slide the mounts into it. Then you have a space saving multi purpose post systems. Various grinders, Mount a vice on one, etc. Space saver system.

That's pretty much what I was thinking, even about mounting them to the wall behind the grinders. Funny, great minds think alike, lol.

After my successful test in aluminum last week, I made another ACME thread in steel. It came out great- even better than the Al one (I didn't go deep enough in the test case). I'm going to slot this worm, then harden it to make a cutter for hobbing a worm gear. (I turned this between centers so I could easily align it on the lathe for hobbing.)
