2017 POTD Thread Archive

Here is my POTPSM (project of the past several months).

Finished a hammer for my mill drawbar.IMG_4652.JPG IMG_4653.JPG IMG_4654.JPG

Accomplished my first aluminum casting, which is nothing other than scrap melted down into the shape of a propane cylinder in order to make room on the shelf.IMG_4608.JPG IMG_4609.JPG IMG_4611.JPG

Made a dust collection fitting from some 16 gauge sheet metal.IMG_4566.JPG IMG_4567.JPG

And lastly, I made a dump bed trailer for my son's Razor Dirt Quad. It isn't finished, i am waiting on electric actuator to show up and then need to put a bottom and side panels on it. He is ecstatic! I even added a reverse switch to it for him.IMG_4655.JPG IMG_4657.JPG IMG_4660.JPG

That is awesome! I would have loved something like that, even as a teenager. I was in charge of the yard, which was one acre of mostly field grass that was landscaped/contoured by the trucks that brought the fill dirt and topsoil. I had a shovel and a wheelbarrow, but fortunately also lots of time and a Walkman. :)

Just in case global warming is real and we get an early spring I thought I better get a canoe trailer made. Another made from scrap project, but I had to buy the wheels, lights and hitch "ouch". The main frame is 3 inch 1/8th wall tube 18 feet long. The fenders were rerolled from the bottom of a 200 gallon home furnace oil tank, (lots of good metal in them). The axle was salvaged from an old bent boat trailer at a buddies. The axle was bent as well but managed to get it nice and straight. It came in at 260 pounds.

Great show of projects guys. Mine is not very functional though...

That is really nice. I've seen those before and wondered how difficult they are to make. What is that called ?

Over the Christmas break I had time to do a little more on the desert sled project bike and I got a chance to use my new milling vise for the first time. I had previously moved the front tank mounts 1/2" back so I made up a new rear mount post for it. I just drilled the hole for it half and inch back from the original. The original was welded to the frame, this one is held onto the frame with a nut.

I found a vendor on eBay that sells reproduction seats for Yamaha enduro's and after some measuring I ordered one for a DT175. I thought about narrowing and shortening the original seat and getting a custom foam and cover made but that would have cost more than this seat did. I made up 6 mounting pads for the rubber cushions of the seat and fabricated a couple of hold down straps. I had to weld those 8 pieces to the frame so I chopped off the center stand mounts from the frame while I had it stripped down for the welding. The seat is thickly padded and nice and narrow and seems to be high quality and I like how it looks on the bike.

I finally got around to removing the brake caliper mount from the left fork leg to clean up the look of the fork.

This is how is sits right now. After I get the engine together it will get a final mock-up assembly then be disassembled for paint. I haven't decided on a color yet.

Nice job on the seat mounting. I remember those being pretty comfy, and it looks like it belongs there. Mike

Spent some time in my shop doing more organizing . . . I have a work bench with a 30" x 60" 1" thick particle board top setting on a Grizzly 2' x 3' cart. About 1' of the bench top hangs over the edge of the bench; there was quite a sag on the ends, especially the one with a 5" vise mounted to it. I recently made up a 3' x 6' work bench for my sheet metal fab tools. I also have a 6' x 2' maple work bench that came out of a school shop. Long story longer, took the 2nd of 3 steps getting tools into their "final" resting spots on the benches. POTD was making this bench into a "dirty jobs" bench. Eventually the maple one will be for assembly/layout work only (maybe some sanding on woodworking projects). The "before" photo has a reddish box on top which is my 12" x 18" granite surface plate. Really wanted to get it off this bench and to a cleaner area.

The roll-around benches work for me as I'm a bit cramped for space. Plus, it gives the option of taking the work surface to the job. Anyway, welded up an angle iron frame to support the particle board top. The two inner lengths of angle rest on the edges of the cart. There are two inner short lengths of angle lagged to the bottom of the top; those capture the ends of the cart so the top doesn't slide on the cart.

The bench currently holds my Oliver die filer, Porter Cable chop saw, 5" vise (Dremel tool sharpen chainsaw chains among other dirty jobs), Dayton 6" disk/ 42" belt sander and a Drill Doctor. I'll likely cover the top with some masonite this spring and also make a couple of either flip up or pinned to the table stock supports for the chop saw.

Next will be the maple assembly/layout bench. Maybe a spring project there.

Bruce

Bruce looks good, looks like you had already reinforced the bottom of the cart prior. My problem is that I do not have the room for even that, I have to move one thing just to set something else. keep up the work, you inspire the rest of us.
