2016 POTD Thread Archive

I think were just winging it till we have something built to post.

that's a little smaller than the one i build 25 years ago...i wish i could have taken it with me when i moved cross country..the friend i gave it to still has it..

I finally finished the fabrication on my mega-bench, and painted it. For those just tuning in this is 12' long, 39" deep, and 33" tall (will be a bit taller with the leveling feet and double layer plywood top installed). I made it to hold my lathe, mill, and surface grinder because in my tiny garage I just don't have room for all of the individual bases and all the wasted space that could be used for storage. Thus the base will be filled with drawers.

I primed it first with a light coat of self-etching primer, then a good coat of automotive primer, and finally multiple coats of urethane alkyd enamel in Osha Red. Why red? Because that's what I have. And because I think it looks awesome. :)

Note the arched support along the longest unsupported stretch on the front. I'm rather proud of that design. It will be perfectly functional and I think it makes the whole thing look even better.

The bad thing about this paint is that it will take days to cure enough to do anything else with it and months to truly cure. But the chemical and chip/abrasion resistance make it worth it.

I can't wait to finally put this thing to use!!

Finally got some work on on a tool height gage for the new large. Threads are pretty, but may be about a thou undersized. Stupid compound has actual measurements, not diameter measurements like the cross slide. This will be the top once I part it off:

Tried to post and add pictures, after trying to attach pictures several times and having them lost when going from preview to post, I just gave up. Use to be a simple process, seems to be a frequent issue these days.:guilty:

My POTD was to trim and place the name tags on the lathe. We use a little CNC router to make accountability tags for our crews in the field. The different colors represent different ranks, but in this case, different switches. Originally I was going with "RPM" but "speed" looks cool.

I love seeing this paint already doing its job first thing this rainy morning. :)

I was a little concerned when the paint was still tacky on the shady-er end of the project (nearest the garage, away from the street) as it got dark and dipped down cooler than the temperature range indicated on the can. But it hardened up nicely overnight, and other than the 400+ gnats that were trapped and killed as I painted it, and shortly thereafter, it looks great. Nothing a little paste wax and #0000 steel wool can't fix next weekend.
