View attachment 128022 I finally found a use for all those empty dog jerky scooby snacks containers hehe. I serviced the lathe with new honey. Head stock, gear box and carriage got fresh ISO 68.

Apparently, we have different gravity in Arizona from the looks of the photo. Why do I keep loading photos upside down? I'm so computer stupid. I'd pull my hair out but am down to three!
Have a great day guys!
I may have the solution to loading photos upside down. For months all my photos load on here upside down or sideways they are correct on my phone and on my computer but not on here. Someone on here told me to edit them first. I take my photos in the shop with my phone and download them to my computer. They look OK but don't load right here. If I open the edit feature on my phone and select crop. and then just crop a tiny bit or what I want and then save them, next download to the computer , they load here correctly. don't know why, don't care why, it works. ( it has something to do with the way the phones format the photos when taken). I also find after editing, they download correctly from the phone to here. :dunno:

I inherited a neglected surface grinder one year ago. I only made it as far as cleaning it up before life and other projects took over. Today I finally wired up a power switch (power cord was the switch) and mostly dressed the permanent magnetic chuck.

I forgot to take a picture of the before, but believe me when I say that it was badly rusted. I first indicated it to see how bad it was. I only have a dial travel indicator, not a test indicator. It showed a range of almost 0.004". So not good.

Then I saturated it with WD-40 and lightly stoned the entire surface. That brought it down to about 0.002". Still more than I would like to have to remove, but I suppose it could be worse. Here it is after the first pass with a freshly dressed wheel.

As you can see it's higher at the near side than the far. I thought I had it very clean before I mounted it. Not going to worry about it now. Just running with it.

After the second pass:

Taking very light passes to avoid heating it up. Also misting with water to keep it cool. Forgot to do a shot after the third pass. Here's the fourth:

Eventually I remembered to engage the magnet while running it. Fifth and final pass tonight:

I had to stop because it was getting late, I hadn't seen my wife much today, and I have an early dentist appointment. Tomorrow night I will take one more of these rough passes, then re-dress the wheel and take a final tenth with smaller steps and going both directions before advancing.

Hard to get a clean shot with one hand, in waning light, while cranking, but here's an obligatory sparky shot. (The long shutter speed makes it look like a much heavier grind than it actually was.)

Thanks for the advice Mark, I'll give it a try.
Update, I did exactly what you recommended and it worked!

When you take a photo with a phone or a camera it records the data from the sensor and includes a tag (think of it like a post-it note on the outside of.the file) with instructions about which way to orient the image when you look at it. Some software (including my local classified site; almost no one uses craigslist around here) gets confused by the tag from some cameras and phones. But when you edit the file in any way it saves the image in the correct orientation and omits the orientation flag. Problem solved-ish. Avoided, anyway.

We have to assume you cleaned the surfaces between the magnet and the table before grinding the top.
