Thanks Mike. I have some large flat brass drops about 1/2" thick that I'll use for that. I had been thinking about asking the original poster if he wanted to sell one but if brass works as well, I won't need a copper one.
When I worked TIG welding thickish stainless sheet I often hankered for some thick copper as backing bars. The point was to prevent warpage as much as possible. I had a few small bronze bars but for the most part I used aluminum. The angles were really handy for welding up 90* corners and stuff. Then I learned to arrange a "slot" in them and run argon behind the weld to have a really nice weld on both sides.

It would be mostly Tigging thin stuff that I didn't want to burn through. I haven't needed to do it yet, but asked because I wondered how the brass would work.
