Thinking back, until last year, I never had a lathe that DIDN'T exhibit something similar (not my doing, of course). I just thought they came from the factory that way.
If it really bugs you, maybe get a hunk of cast iron and make a replacement. I know you have a mill and are pretty proficient at scraping.
