I don't know if you had noticed it but OnLineMetals.com will sell custom lengths. Just check the "Create Custom Size" tab. A 3" length of 1-3/4"dia. would be $15.51.
 
Thanks RJ, I guess I overlooked that. I just looked at the price for the random 10-12" piece. If I thought I would need more of it any time soon
that's what I would have bought. As it turned out, I got an almost 5" piece for 21 bucks with free shipping, so I think I came out just fine.
