Worth of a L&S?

I suppose it depends on which model and how old it is, a friend just bought an 18" I think, late model for $4500

It was built at the end of 1930.

That might not be too bad of a deal, but I'd want to hear it run in all the speeds and try to see if all the feeds work. I have run several L&S lathes similar, but early 1940s, they are good machines if not worn out like the ones that I remember from my apprenticeship. I would look for looseness in the spindle bearings as it appears that they possibly may be plain bearings since they have bolted on bearing caps. Would not hurt to make a lesser offer.

Curious to hear the outcome. If that spindle is in decent shape and the rest of the lathe isn’t all out of whack - that is one helluva a deal.
