Since several people were talking about wood turning I decided this weekend to play around withe some. I have not done any serous turning in years and forgot how fun it is. Mainly this weekend I made a set of turning tools. :lmao:
The shaft is .675 O1 steel. The handles are cherry. The ferrules and end caps are brass. I threaded the the ends of the shaft 1/2-13 and turned the diameter under the handle to .500". Right in front of the ferrule is a stainless washer because the front hole in the ferrule was cut to large. Can't image how that happened.
2 of the tools were made for a .250" carbide shaft. I have a box of these from broken router bits. (no I didn't break them) These I sharpened to a round nose and diamond point tool. These are polished off with a 1200 grit diamond wheel. The diamond point will shave you. After turning all 4 handles and playing with a bunch more turnings they will still shave arm hair. The next tool is the same but for a .357 insert. With the inserts its easy to cut custom shapes. I'm not planing on doing any huge bowls so these smaller tools work well. When I get my surface grinder set up maybe I will try a carbide gouge. The last tool I will slot to hold tool steel blanks. This will give me wider cutting surfaces for straight parts and long low curves.
This is an idea still in the works. When I get a better design it will be a wooden lid for a water bottle. The final bottle will be my stainless one. This is just a cheap one I picked up at the second hand store for $0.10. I don't like the shape of this so I need to go back to some sketches. When I get a better shape I will use some better wood maybe a nice burled maple.
