So I managed to break the 20T part of the gear. I printed up the plastic version and included an STL file for those with 3D printers. I consider it temporary until the real gear comes in or until I repair the old gear. It works very well for moving the carriage back and forth to the right position. I do not know about using it for cutting.

To repair the old gear I intend to cut the 20T section down to .628" diameter. I bought 1 1/8" brass bar. I will bore it out to 5/8 then press onto a 5/8 mandrel take it down to the diameter for a mod 1.25 2oT gear. I have ordered the cutters and will cut the 20T gear. When finished I will put the original cut down steel in the freezer then press on the brass gear.

I think this is a lot safer for the lathe than a hardened rack against a hardened gear. The handwheel can run into something and break one or the other. I would rather fix what will be broken to the brass gear which is easily replaced.

When all of the parts and cutters come in I will update.
