IMG_8265.jpgBought a bunch of tools along with a Gerstner box needing some love and this gauge was amongst all the items. The person who owned all this stuff is busy taking a dirt nap and worked as a machinist / toolmaker at Pratt & Whitney aircraft. The bars are removable and held in with recessed socket cap screws. Overall length is around 6 inches and it's around an inch wide.

That was quick. Thanks.
Very interesting.
I will surely be using this on the mill.
What other trinkets were in the box ? We love pics ! :encourage: Being a toolmaker and a Gerstner box , there might be some good stuff in there . The sine bar looks to be toolmaker made . Lets see the goods .

About half of it is getting parted out on Ebay while the other half is staying in my tool box. It would be laborious posting up all the pictures. The Suburban drill press vise alone that came with it is worth what I paid for the whole lot. It was all Starrett and Browne & Sharpe. the box needs some love and one of my other cross addicted hobby obsessions involves wood so it's being addressed. The mildew stink in all the felt and leather cases is a real wonderful thing :(

if I get a chance I will post up a few things. It's been days of cleaning, lubricating and need to get back to other things.

As sine bar is used to set precision angles. That looks like a 5 inch one and there are little sine bar books to tell you how much precision blocks needed to set angles. There is most likely one in the tool box.

What is it or what is it used for?

As to what it is it says on the sleeve.

Surface roughness gage.

They let you make a visual and tactile comparison to common surface roughness specs. More comprehensive cards have examples of specific types of machining (turning, milling, shaping, grinding, etc) for each surface spec.
