What is this for?

Mill is 4 years old. Upper bearing on spindle started making noise.

Replaced bearings. Bearing noise is gone.

What is this set screw with nut for? It goes into the head, locks with nut.

Looked at parts diagram...there is a pin that fits, guessing into column slot.

That pin was never there, thought set screw went into column slot, but it is
1/4 inch short. So I used some drill rod, made a new pin. Fits into column
when set screw is tightened.

What does it do?

​Top bearing, washer lock had sheared. Top bearing was pressed on like bottom bearing.


Mill is back together now, working okay.
