What is a Speed Lathe?

That is not technically a traditional speed lathe. At the turn of the century (when tailstocks were called footstocks) a speed lathe was a lathe that was set up with a tool rest only. (No cross slide , carriage etc) Metal was turned with tools similar to wood turning "gouges". These were called gravers. They are still called that when used on a jewelers lathe.

That is a very nice clean hardinge--it would fit very nice in my small shop if it was close and I had the money--Dave
