Washing Machine Agitator Shaft-- Machinable?

What he said, but it could be case hardened 1018....
Check the shaft with a magnet too

A magnet will not help much, many of the Martensitic SS alloys are magnetic, some austinitic alloys become magnetic after cold working, cold rolled threaded rod is one example, being magnetic does not mean that the material isn't considered "stainless steel".

Put a magnet on a pocket knife blade that says "440 stainless", even if wasn't made elsewhere 440 is always magnetic in my experience.

i have some stainless thats magnetic, but there is a huge difference in the magnetic "pull" when i compare it to 1018... your right tho it wont tell you a whole lot
