I came across about 10 straight flute center drills today. I have never seen one and had NO clue what they are used for so, of course, I bought all 10. Can anyone tell me what they are used for? will they cut metal? thanks

Without seeing the cutting edge it's hard to tell what materials it will cut. It should cut well.

it would be nice if they can be used on metal.

Those are spotting drills. Yes, they can be used on metal.

Google the 6WUG3 and it comes up to Chicago Latrobe sold by Grainger among others. Used for cast iron, nickel and other hard metals.
Interesting. Have not run across them until this post. Just what you need working with Titanium!

in an effort to figure out what they are I hit it with a file and didn't even scratch it. So then I touched it to the grinder and that did nothing. these things are super hard. And yes I will cut metal. Great score for me. and wife wanted to know why I bought them if I didn't know what they were? LOL .

Sometimes you just luck out!! Your wife will ask you that more than once.

They look a lot like carbide drills.
