Recently I acquired a SB 16” lathe, and I am working on getting it working. I just did a thread on the lead screw, now I would also like to find or make a carriage lock nut (or block). This is the part that the bolt through the saddle clamps against the bottom of the ways to lock the carriage. I have seen a couple come through eBay at $79, and $84 +/- I don’t know if that’s a good price, but I figured if I could get a measured drawing or photo, I could build one relatively easily. Has anyone got a 16” SB they’d be willing to measure up that part from? I have the bolt already.

Yes I have a 16 Southbend.
If you still need it after work today I can provide it.

I would certainly appreciate the effort. I’m kind of a “back woods machinist”, but I am sure I could make something that would work if I knew it’s dimensions. Thanks.

Those things aren't easy to get to on an assembled lathe. You almost have to remove the saddle to get access to them.

Here are the dims for a 10L saddle lock - which is SMALLER than yours (although similar). You might be able to fab one using these measurements as a guide. Note: This is NOT my work, so I can't help if you need extra dims.

If I missed something or you need more just ask.
Preferably before I put it back in...lol
it comes out easy and goes back in easy.
no worries

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!! I really appreciate your efforts.
There are, however, a couple of caliper readings that are rather ambiguous. I’m sure that you intended for the readings to reflect dimensions shown in previous pictures, but the readings shown do not easily correlate to the pictures they belong to. Can you please tell me what the blank dimensions are for the top drawing? Also please let me know if I forgot anything. Thanks again.

Hi, again. I did think of one other dimension that we didn’t think of before. The upper land to the edge of the block as shown in the lower drawing. All missing dimensions now have a star on my drawings. Also I just did the math to check the overall block dimensions. And as you can see the 2.093 dimension doesn’t agree with the sum of the other dimensions in the upper part of that drawing. Can you check my numbers?
