I have a late 40's South Bend 16" lathe, and have been having issues with the leather belt slipping....even with the slower speed spindle selected. The v-belts from the motor itself aren't slipping, its the primary belt going to the headstock. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot, at least other than cleaning the contact points? Any options for replacement belts? Thanks!

If your flat belt has absorbed some fluid like oil it's possible you will need to replace it.
If the running surfaces(sheaves) have become polished ,you might want to try scuffing them with a scotchbrite pad.
How's your belt tension?

Have you tried adjusting the belt? Easy to do and may solve your problem.

You might want to try some of this belting from McM-C. It is like using a serpentine belt, but easier to connect. I've heard good reports from those who use it. I got some 1-1/4" material to replace my fabric belt on my H10, but haven't installed it yet.

Weld the ends of this belting together for a firm hold. Resistant to chemicals and abrasion, it is often used for light to medium duty power transmission. To weld ends, use a welding kit.

Leather works best
Hang the belt by a 40 pound weight for month. A place that sells leather goods will have glue for shoes works on the belt too.

McMaster sells "No Stretch" leather belting. It has a nylon core between the leather. I use this on my Heavy 10, it works great, never had to adjust the tension for years now, even though I sometimes forget to disengage the drive.

This is what I bought for my South Bend 14-1/2" lathe, custom cut to the correct length with the interlocking pin joinery installed. It is cloth but covered in a rubbery coating and grips well. It will stall the 2-HP motor in my lathe, but it also slips just a bit when starting up the highest speeds without being damaged in the process. I'd buy it again.

My leather belt had become biased enough in however many decades that it didn't track well.

This is what I have now. It is delaminating quite badly, hence the new belt. Also, it will run with the "click - click - click - click" of the connector every time it passes over the pulley.
