Im wanting to start a source refrence for newbies and experianced.
What silver solder do you use? (Brand, and type)
Where do you get it? (Suppliers, and contact info)
What flux do you use with it?

Sent from somewhere in East Texas by Jake Parker!

We get hard, medium and soft silver solders from Rio Grande. But,this is a company for jewelry makers.

For brass,I use a bunch of strips of solder that I got from a refrigeration mechanic's widow who was clearing out his shop. It more nearly matches the color of brass. So works well with brass things you are making.

the last time i got some, it was from a box store- it came with a liquid acid flux in a toothpaste tube.
My local welding outfit supplies Harris brand consumables & ancillaries , they also have bar solder if you have a large job to do.

I use Silvaloy 355 Siver Solder along with UltraFlux.

I get both from Brownells. http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-t...-flux/silvaloy-355-silver-solder-prod584.aspx

Brownells indicates that it Has the lowest flow temperature, best wetting and best flow characteristics of any cadmium-free, high silver-content, commercial silver solder. All i know is that it is easy to work with and gives me good results.

Bicycle framebuilders use a lot of silver for joining lugged bicycle frames and brazing stainless. Cycle Design has alloys and fluxes that were designed to work well together. They even have a product called "fillet pro" that is designed for fillet brazing of stainless steel bicycle frames. Silver usually flows like water and can't be used to build a fillet, but "fillet pro" allows you to build a fillet similar to using brass.
