Cutting grooves, especially vee grooves can be a pain on a flat face due to the zero cutting speed at the tip of a pointed cutter. Locking the tool & using as a shaper really reduces the cutting time & noise...

Just a piece of round hss - hand ground.

Looks like it has flats on it, is there any specific angle you've ground those to to make it work so well for this kind of shaping/engraving?

It was ground similar to a screwcutting tool.
