Mike , looking at the video and listening to the ratchet sound, I am thinking you are advancing the tool on the cutting stroke not the return stroke.
Thank you very much Doubleeboy, you were 100% correct-
it was feeding in the forward stroke!!!
i didn't even consider which way was correct, it was in the same position as when i got it.
i just went out and reversed the feed and locked 'er down- now the box advances on the return stroke :grin:

i really appreciate the heads up,

i have one other piece of the puzzle that may be part of the mystery.

when i bought the shaper,
the PO had a bit in the toolpost with the business end oriented like he was using the pull stroke.
could it be possible that he had the feed reversed to complement using the pull stroke???
or am i reaching for a conclusion to justify my ignorance? o_O

nope :confusion:
my ignorance is now justified!!! :grin big:

all i can conclude now is that the tool was in backward, maybe hastily, to keep the toolholer in place.
and the shaper was feeding on the push stroke :frown 2:

i can't let that stop the show!
so i got the situation rectified and did some more shapin'

the surface finish is great!!!
and it now fits the toolholder.!

I think I've heard of cutting on the pull stroke when doing key ways. And then it was cutting on the top of the bore. Haven't tried it.

I am no expert on shapers but I do own one and use it semi regularly. I can on my Logan 8" set the table to advance on push or pull stroke, but I can not change which one is faster, it will always move faster on return stroke. I have never operated an Ammco, but they look nice and are well regarded. Looks like Mike is getting some pretty good surface finish. The other day I took a 1/4" lathe tool sharpened roughly to Mikey's lathe tool specs and put it in my shaper and made very nice little 9 shaped chips, with a smile on my face. Eventually I would like to get set up with dividing head on shaper and make internal tooth gear wheels, but I suspect that is a ways away. I will be following Mike's shaper threads.

I have mistakenly feed on the forward stroke , you can get away with it sometimes but if you get in tough to machine steel and the cut gets progressively larger as stroke continues you can get into trouble real quick. On a little shaper I want everything singing like a sewing machine, seems like all the little machines were built to a price point and there are weak links, I sure don't want to bust one up for some foolish move. In my experience on the few machines I have been around while operating you want to hear the ratchet sound on forward stroke and the silence on return stroke. When machine is running fast sometimes its hard to differentiate. To ease my confused state I have taken a dial indicator on a Noga holder and set up to see table advancement to make sure I got it right.

maybe an upcoming project???

i saw stefan gotswinter on youtube using the pull stroke, but as Bob korves mentioned earlier.
the clapper is hinged at the bottom,
instead of at the (conventional) top of the clapper, when you use the pull stroke.

have you tried thicker oils for lubricating the knocking areas?

the original wood cabinet that my shaper came on has long since deteriorated.
the only remnant is the top that the shaper is bolted to.
i really need to replace the wood.
the shaper is setting on a nice frame, but i really need to replace the wood.
i have considered some red oak planks with a substantial plywood top.

Cutting across the face can be done in both directions if the tool is ground correctly. When using the pull motion the clapper usually is reversed or locked. Mostly it can do almost any type cut . Even gears can be cut , splines , internal and exterior. One of the most under used tools in many years.. I use to love cutting vise jaw grips. The points were real points not nubs.
