shaper motor

All of my shapers use a countershaft with the step pulley (or gearbox) on the countershaft.

Well it looks like I either have to add a jack shaft, get a dc motor and controler, or a 3ph and vfd. I think a jack shaft and good pulleys would be my best bet (not digging my china pullys after getting a better look at them). Any thing special I need to know in planning this setup? Thank you for all the advice so far.

Oh and the motor that came with it is a 1750 rpm. My digital tach was acting goofy, after messing with it I got a better reading, gonna stick with this one.

The 7" Atlas calls for a 1/2HP.
I had a 1/3 HP on it initially, and it would stall easily.
1/2 HP motor fixed that.
