Chuck key is never left in the chuck by its self
If you turn on the lathe and forget the key know it is throw at you

Did you see the video uses a magnetic strip to to tools & bits
I use a demagnetizer on my tool & bits so chips DO Not stick to the tools & bits

Back when I was starting out,I'd sometimes leave the key in the drill press. It ALWAYS managed to consistently hit my right on the breast bone!! Ouch!! Machines have no sympathy,do they!
 
One that I've learned through "experience" ::) is not to lean over the bed of the lathe to "line eye" the cutting tool and the work piece without making darn sure the tailstock is far enough back so that you won't smack your head into it. :-[

Where in Nebraska? I spent four months the summer of 2010 in Hastings working on a powerplant addition. To call that summer though was a streatch of the imagination. Sleet and snow in May, wind and dust the rest of the time.

And that's the "good" weather here. :) I live in a small town west of Omaha (on the East end of the state). I was born here and really love the state and except for the taxes I would recommend it to anyone.
