Purchased Old Martin Lathe, Made In Germany

Wow! That is big and beautiful!!!

Any idea the date of that beast?
Are you planning to do a full restore, just the required clean-up or something in between?
What HP is that motor?

It is great to see someone that sees the value in the big old iron.
Thanks for posting!

It was made in 1957, 10 hp 84" between centers and 20" turning cacapacity. I have the steady rest and taper attachment.

That's quite the lathe for a home shop. A local shop I had a chance to tour had a few massive lathes. One about 2x the size of yours and one at least 3x bigger. I forget the swing but the faceplate was around 6' tall. It was a sobering sight for sure, and these were fairly newly made machines as well. The electric motors alone probably weighed more than my SB13 by itself.

Wow, that's awesome. I'm jealous. I've had a few chances to get a big lathe, but shied away from the logistics. I can deal with #3000, 3 phase and 600V requirements, I even have the realestate – but that looks like a pretty dominating piece of iron you have there.

Please show us pictures of first chips and some big piece of steel spinning around with chips flying off.
