Nice lathe. Got a grinder? HSS blanks and some simple grinds will handle a ton of work. I bought carbide tipped tools when I got my lathe, and I find I don't use them much for what I do (normally 4130 is has hard as I am working on.) The HSS blanks come in lots of sizes and are pretty cheap. If you're dying to spend money, you could get the kind with HSS inserts and carbide so you're covered at 11:00 and you want to turn something too tough for HSS.

This is a good instructional on grinding late tools: http://.................../portfolio-items/grinding-turning-and-facing-tools-for-the-lathe/

Have fun!

The lathe will be cheap, by the time you outfit with everything else. I agree about using HSS, the only carbide I use is for turning threads, and I buy inserts for that. Otherwise they are ground tools. But you may find your chucks not up to par, a QCTP and about a dozen holders, etc.

Very nice shop.:thumbsup2: Congratulations on the new Precision Mathews lathe as well.

As far as tooling, I like carbide inserts, however, I also like to use HSS and feel it is a good practice to become proficient at grinding HSS. A QCTP and several holders are nice to assist with tool setup time but not mandatory.

You will also want to invest some time fabricating a softstop/dial indicator for the longitudinal travel, or you can use an inexpensive magnetic style. That is one of the most used accessories that I have had on my previous lathe as well as the one I use at work. Personally, I prefer a hard mounted soft stop/DI vs. the magnetic style but they both have their merit.

I assume you got a drill chuck with the preferred package but if not get one with the correct MT for the tailstock as that is a heavily used item.

Mike.

Oh and on edit. I just noticed you are new here. Welcome to the forum.

Nice shop. Looks like you have a nice grinder and belt sander. You are setup for HSS tool grinding. Enjoy.

Great looking...well equipped shop you have. I'm jealous of all of the floor space that you have.
As far as tooling goes, check Amazon.com and Enco. IMHO: They seem to have the best bang for the buck for casual machinists. Also, I've scooped some good accessories for my milling machine from Harbor Freight.

Happy Trails!

PS. I'm sure that you know this but, if you have any used equipment dealers in your your area, you may be able to get some deals there. Tooling accessories are considered "smalls" . So the dealer may want to just get rid of it.

Geez, Ron, Nice shop!
Can I come over and "play?"
I can be there in 2-1/2 hours....

Seriously, that's a great shop you've got there.

I wonder if I can use inch steel pipe as rollers for moving the PM-1236 w/stand around the shop?
