My home built phase converter used a 1.5 hp 220v motor as the generator. The motor has to be replaced I have a 208v 1.5hp motor on hand. I am only powering a .5 hp .220v motor on my M- head Bridgeport. Would it work with the208 motor as the phase converter?

The motor on the Bridgeport should have a tag giving the amp draw at the rated voltages. Most 220, 230, and 240V motors will also work on 208V, and often the tag shows an amp rating at that voltage.

The rule of thumb on motor voltage is to stay within 10% of the rated voltage. Your 208V motor should work well up to 220.8V, and will use about 10% less amps at full rated power. Any protection against overloading the motor would have to be changed to match the new amp draw.

Many times manufacturers rate the motors for more than 10% voltage differences, but they assume responsibility for any failure.
