As a side note, my SB9 motor has gibs......
 
Ha, good catch on the name, I missed that. :) So the trick is to not fill up the oilers like I would if it were horizontally mounted.

even when they are horizontal it is not best to fill the oil cups--just a drop or two is enough of 30wt every couple of months
 
The 1930's motor I recently had apart used and uses shielded bearings which are factory lubricated with grease (for "life") yet have oil ports. I'm not sure about the lubricating schedule. Too much will wash out the grease? A little keeps rust away from the outside of stuff. I will add a single drop every year or so. Plain bearing motors likely benefit more and as stated, often use a felt pad in conjunction with an oil filled sintered bearing material. I wonder if those ports aren't like elevator and stop light buttons which often are not wired to anything.
