I'm considering full strength Crud Cutter and a nylon bristle brush to start cleaning the painted surfaces on my new old lathe. Any ideas for manual cleaning are welcome. It is pretty dirty.

Dawn Power Wash, in the stay bottle.

Oven cleaner in the blue can. It's chemically not much different from HVAC coil cleaner, in case you have access to that. Let it sit for 15 mins or so, then brush and wipe off with blue shop towels or terry cloth. I'm not averse to pressure cleaning, so long as you can dry everything after. Then there's stripping the paint; we've lost access to methylene chloride, leaving a bunch of weaksauce on the market. I'm thinking the N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone strippers are what I'll be using on my next project.

N-metha waaa? I can feel cancer cells just a poppin’ with the mere mention of that string o’ gobbledygook! :alien:

I like mineral spirits. The odorless flavor, if available. The Krud Kutter will work, but it's slower.

I still find myself going to a strong mix of warm plain old dish soapy water?

If able to dry it and oil it well light use of a pressure washer.

I used to have a small steam cleaner that worked great on Cosmoline on old surplus rifles.
