Oil for hydrodynamic damper

Ive used newspapers often with good results.

The key is to pack the box tightly so things cant begin to move around.

Crumpled newspaper packed tightly. USPS used to specify 3” minimum on all sides of the contents for parcels; machines & parts are better served by closed cell foam.

each piece requires thought. A solid case, foam, the expensive foam that is not compressible. is best. A bag over the item and urethane great stuff is super rigid, but needs to be done so the part can be removed easily. A case with support rods to stop things from moving.

newspapers ... NO
I'm afraid you're right about packaging. The preparation to ship was inadequate but he obviously knew nothing about the item. I didnt know how to advise the seller, so it's unfortunate all around. My personal philosophy is maximum responsibility so I'd rather not file a claim unless it's an obvious violation. Also when I filed a claim in the past, it didn't help.

I had been thinking ISO 90 mineral oil for no good reason. Probably because I once had an old Ford tractor that used that for the transmission fluid and hydraulic oil. Fairly close to 5W-30, which I have in the shelf, so I'll start there.

It’s not your responsibility to advise the Seller how to pack the shipment (the most I have ever done is to request that they take into account the rough handling UPS/USPS may contribute).

eBay typically sides with the Buyer, but you need to take early action, before attempting to fix broken parts. However, it’s never too late (within 30 days) to try.

When I receive a package that is obviously damaged I take photos before opening and throughout the unboxing, and have never list a claim case, either as a Buyer or Seller on eBay in 25 years. As a Seller, I’m upfront about any issues or unknowns, which helped with the one claim I had. As a Buyer, I have negotiated mutually agreeable resolutions several times and got eBay to agree with a “not as described” claim when the Seller told me that his listing said no returns.
