I too am a golfer and have been thinking about making a putter or two.
I have a decent sized bench mill (about 1000 lbs) and 13x40 lathe and wouldn't feed either a steady diet of stainless. I have made stainless parts, like a full-profile compensator for a 1911 style gun out of stainless but didn't enjoy the experience. I'm sure my machines didn't like it either.
I will likely experiment with carbon steel that I can later hot-blue or nickel for protection and appearance, and I will experiment with a aluminum flat stick with steel or carbide for weights and a steel/stainless/copper face insert. Lots of ways to do this with smaller machines.
