Well today was a long one, but I am richer now than I was at the start with a Van Norman 12 sitting in my driveway. I know, no original motor and it is missing one of the handwheels, but at $300 up here, I didn't think it was too bad a deal. The first two pictures are of it at the first owners house and the last two are at my house. I am surprised at how fast the ram was able to be removed. I have a 1900s upright drill that was only a little faster to breakdown. I am always amazed at old school engineering. Simple and effective. Anyways, I can't wait to see it working and to be honest, these have a pretty good reputation, even though this is the first time I have ever heard of them.

Some guys on another site thought it was a bit steep for not having any original tooling, the arbor support, missing a side handle and mount, and the missing motor that got replaced with a 1 phase. I did ask for their opinion and most told me not to get it and look for a better deal. So, I don't know.

Anyways, I have been building a trailer today to mount my hoist to so that I can move it to my shop in the back. So, within the week, it should finally be inside again and not just tarped up outside.

Congrats! I think you got a deal too!
I came real close to getting a #12 also, aside from the not-s0-standard collet size everything I read up on it was positive.
A good deal showed up closer to me on a Bridgeport so I went that route instead. Still like the VN though; wish I had the time/space/money to have gotten both...

You did alright. Better deals can be had, but they might be a 1000 miles away, ask me how I know. Collets do come up from time to time, so just keep looking. As long as your gears and bearings are OK, the rest can be found or made.

I think we have made comments in another site regarding this same mill. I appreciate the help there. May I ask, how do you run 3 phase power?

Congratulations. You are gonna like her!

Somebody had replaced the motor on my VN6 with a 1ph 1725rpm motor.
Turned out to be way to fast for many horizontal milling applications.

When you select a motor be sure that you think about rpm and pulley sizes.

I am having trouble finding somethings. Do you mind giving me some help?

First off, how do you drain the oil from the ram gear box. I can't find an oil plug anywhere? Please don't say I have to pull the sight glass.

Second, any pictures of what the key looks like in the spindle? Mine was ground down to fit the arbor into, because the dufous I bought it off did not know what he was doing.

I may have more, but that is all for now.

I own a van Norman 22LU and 1750 is a lil slow for my mill so I am replacing with a 3450 but I have a r8 adapter in my mill and cone pulleys o. My mill as well to hit the sweet spot for any metal I want to do but I think all VN knees are the same on draining oil I'll look on mine when I get home tonight to see if I can help but on a VN #12 1-1/2 HP 1750 rpm motor is what they had on them
