Took delivery of my new G0709 yesterday. Shipped incredibly quick given my location.

It's early, but apparently only 2 minor damage issues. Biggest is the bottom standoff for the gear set cover was broken ( easy fix when you own a lathe ;) ). Second is probably from the first, the sheet metal spindle cove was laying wedged in the shipping pallet and slightly bent (not an issue, a rubber mallet restored it to almost new ;) )

I do have one question though, since I had a couple hours while breaking in the spindle, I started cleaning the schmoo and while exercising the cross slide, it bound up and wouldn't move. Since I planned on disassembling and cleaning it anyway, it wasn't a big deal, but it did highlight a potential issue. After removing the cross slide hand wheel, I noticed that the key for the wheel was comically small and tilted up in the keyway causing the binding issue. It's about half the length of the shaft keyway and was lifted up at a 45deg angle binding against the thrust bearing..........is this normal? (Not the binding, the small key stock size ;) )

Other than that, the usual issues, rough edges and finish, but smooth and solid feel. I quickly threw an indicator on the 3 jaw chuck and had .0008 indicated. Good enough for me considering it's on 4x4's sitting on car wheel Dolly's at the moment. ( another week before the intended base mounts arrive. )

huge upgrade from my 70yr old atlas 10" ;)

I'm going to post several pics, please don't judge.......I'm stubborn and part of why this unload happened the way it did is the local equipment rental wouldn't rent me a forklift and trailer because I own a 1/2 ton truck. My trucks tow rating is 12,400lbs. Forklift and trailer combined are 10,500. (Also well within my 1634lb payload ;) ) They would rent it to me if I borrowed my buddies 2004 Ford Excursion because it's a 3/4 ton platform, but it's tow rating is 11,000lbs........over the years I've grown very tired of this one size fits all thinking.

consequently, I enlisted my son, rented a 5x10 dump bed trailer (also hauled 4yds of gravel for my driveway), grabbed our John Deere 2025r ( no forks and only about 1000lb lift capacity) and just "winged it". Took 3hrs and several changes of the plan but we got it done. ;) before you hammer me about the dangers.......just know that I've spent 35yrs working on ships and rigging machinery, gear and cargo so I'm not an idiot. Just stubborn. :D At no point where either of us in any danger, the lathe? Maybe, but not us. Granted I would have really liked to have chain falls and real lifting straps, but the ratchet straps we had worked.........just very very slowly and in one case I needed 2 so I could slack one while the other held, then slack the other. ;) Basically a "Yard and Stay" rig with a crappy yard and stay. ;)

I do have another question? Anyone have a clean way to drain the gear box oil for the change? Looks like the plug isn't in a very good place to keep from making a mess. Thinking about popping the top and pumping it out to avoid making a mess. Filled it with the top off because I wanted to check the gears and assess the debris in the gearbox. It was definitely dirty, but nothing a good wipe down and a couple short interval oil changes can't solve.

I come bearing no answers. But that’s one heck of a step up from the ubiquitous Atlas lathe. Congrats!

I also have no answers. But nice lathe!

Call Grizzly and share the photos of the damaged parts. They will send replacements under warranty. They have great customer service.

Congratulations on your new lathe!!!!

Congratulations on the new lathe.
Concerning the situation with the key, that certainly doesn't look right. I can't imagine how that key would ever stay in position. I would replace it with a key that fits tightly in the keyway.

Your comically small key: you got the last key out of the bar. It was short, but hey, nobody will notice, right? Even get Griz to send you a piece of key stock, and offer to fit it yourself. A few minutes with a hacksaw and file, and no biggie.

Your rigging is just fine. Despite the naysayers "Never use ratchet straps for lifting camp" with appropriate care, they can be used by someone that has their head on straight. They fail a waaay below their ratings, however. I ma happy to use a 4000lb max strap to hold a 500lb load. I'm also happy to 4 of them to suspend a 1000 lb load.

I think you did very well with your unload - Congrats!!!

I drew most of the oil out of the headstock with a turkey baster before pulling the drain plug. Then screwed in a fitting with a hose and rinsed it out. I stuck a couple of magnets in the bottom too before refilling.

Your cross feed key can't be correct! I pulled mine to install a taper attachment; maybe I missed it but I don't recall seeing a gap like that.

I didn't like the spongy-ness of the control switches. I pulled the thin aluminum plate and reinforced it on the back side with another piece of aluminum.

I also replaced the M10 (?) cap screw for the carriage lock with a knob/handle. Saves grabbing the 6mm Allen wrench all of the time. I also changed the friction-ball micrometer dial on the cross feed to a more conventional clamp screw. I did that mod when the taper attachment was added. I didn't/haven't done the compound dial yet; I've gotten used to holding the crank and rotating the dial though my preference is still a clamp screw.

I've had mine for about 8 years and have been very happy with it. I've had two issues over the years. One was snapping the tail stock lock lever spring pin. As I recall, the lock handle is attached to the shaft with the clamp-cam with a spring pin. The manual shows basically a bushing slipping over a shaft with a spring pin slipping through the bushing (both sides) and shaft. Mine had a short spring pin that only went through one side of the bushing/sleeve. I replaced it with a solid pin.

The other problem was a "drip, drip, drip" from the bottom of the QCGB after 5 or 6 years. I was super-lazy on this "fix". I drain the QCGB, cleaned the bottom of the cover and stuck a length of Flex-seal tape along the bottom. A better fix would have been pulling the cover plate and replacing the gasket, but again, I was lazy. On the plus side, it's worked so far (a year)!

I used some aluminum tape that's made for construction when they tape foam panels together. I just used several pieces to form a pour spout into my funnel.

Turkey baster jogged my memory, totally forgot I had. Vacuum pump. Haven't used it in ages since I sold the car I needed it for several years ago. :) looks like a great new use for it.

I put a small stack of neodymium magnets in the gear box before I filled it the first time. Definitely some small metal particles on it after the breakin. I can't manage to get my hands anywhere near the bottom back of the gear box to wipe away the stuff that's there, nothing very large though. Consequently, I'm going to change the gearbox oil again in a couple weeks in the hopes that it gets cleaner.

I tracked down some key stock and will make a new larger key for the cross slide. Also, I'm just going to make a new pulley cover standoff to replace the one that broke during shipping. Just waiting on some tooling since I sold all my 3/8" and 1/2" stuff with my atlas 10". Much of it should be here early next week.
