Making a dead center

I have two #2 MT centers for my small lathe, one is hard, one is not hard, neither one is marked with the ring.

That has not been my observation in my over 60 years on the job.
Volume 1, Edition 43,copyright 1944.
I trust the twins more than most folks, especially lately.

Whatever is handy will work.

Softer is better as it will allow the work to grab it a bit.

Tailstock end needs to be live with a bearing or very hard with Grease.

Does not need to be marked, just toss it in when needed and give it a skim cut and it will be perfect every time.
