After switching from glass to magnetic for my lathe X-axis, I figured I'd complete the job by doing the same for the Z-axis. While the X-axis scale is 1 μm, I planned on a 5 μm scale for the Z-axis but, out-of-stock, since the price difference isn't great, I bought a 1 μm read head.
The installation was much easier on the Z-axis, I used the existing read head bracket I'd made for the glass scale read head, a 1x1x1/8" length of aluminum angle stock acts a swarf roof over the assembly.
