LMS has this coaxial centering indicator for $70:

Apparently this is used to center work on a mill table. It is an import. I was wondering if anyone has used it and if it is decent quality for a home shop. I want to have one in stock.

BTW, I noted other threads on the coax here:

Co-Ax gages have a special mechinism in them. When the feeler moves from side to side the yoke it is attached to moves a rack up and down moving the gages needle. The imports I have seen are not that smooth in this transition. I have a Blake and the imports are no comparison.

Yes, that is a good price. I would ask where it's origin is before I bought it. If it is a Baker it's India. Most of the rest are China.

This one I would love to own.

Jeff also carries those at: http://www.tools4cheap.net/proddetail.php?prod=centind for about the same price (outofstock at the moment). I am guessing at this price range these are imports, and from what I had read before, could be a 50/50 chance of quality issues.

a coaxial indicator is great for aligning lathe tailstock (but no, I do not own one).

Bill,

Little Machine Shop sells those by the way.

Which one? There are 3 types out there on that post. Import which is what LMS has. Blake or Haimer. The Haimer is out of my wallet area.

That's the cheapest I have ever seen a Haimer go for. It is not a Haimer Centro either, just an edge finder.

I hear that Bill, what can I say.. I am still learning on some stuff.. I have a lot of catching up to do.. that is for sure!

Nelson,

I have the imported one. I checked its calibration by centering over a ring gauge with a tenths DTI then installing the coax indicator. The needle on the coax was wobbling only about 3 or 4 tenths. Not bad... Just bear in mind that the runout reading a coax indicator shows doesn't accurately quantify runout for various readings (it's more of an angle measurement). However, it does work very well for its intended purpose... Centering over a bore or cylinder.

I would like to get the indicator but I have a Benchmaster verticle mill, so there won't be enough verticle space.
