I have a 6" chuck that fits a south bend 9" lathe.

The only markings I can find is 3984 above the oil port.

The jaws have . ,.., ... punched on the outside edges.

Anyone ever run across one like this?

I had one that looked identical, all the way down to the 3984 marking that may actually cross reference with main line Bison part numbers for some sort of comparison in size and style. It was a china chuck but it worked pretty well compared to the old worn out chucks I also had at the time. I sold it with my Atlas.

The punch marks look like a user made them to keep the jaws in the right slots.
If the chuck is working, use it. If it is "crunchy" feeling it is time for a tear down and inspection. Then it can be determined if there is anything wrong and what it would take to fix it.
If all is well, de-bur, re-lube and put back together.
