Is Osb A Good Choice For A Surface Plate Cover?

UD, I would hope that you have your bar set as high as it will go! Let’s go for it! And it won’t break the bank either. I would use some pre-finished Baltic Plywood or similar. Then run a nice mitered exotic wood border around the plywood. And cover the inside with some green felt. Make it right, and then you will not need to worry about using any fake materials. If you are going to be a bear, be a grizzly…Good Luck, Dave.

You are 100% right Chips,
I'm gonna be a Grizz!!!!!

Umla,

Here is some inspiration for you, this is one I just made out of Baltic Birch plywood, Canadian Birch hardwood. and Black Walnut.

splate1.jpg I think a good idea is to not let anything come in contact with the surface of the plate. I made a box cover from 1x4 oak and some oak plywood from the big orange box store, the cover sits above the plate and is also a handy place to put other stuff when the plate isn't in use.

You have already seen mine, Mike, but must be looking for something else. Mine is made from 5mm underlayment let into dado grooves in 3/4 x 1-1/2" trim moulding. On top is HF toolbox drawer liner, underneath is 3/8" closed cell foam, from a backpacking sleeping pad in it's former life, both stuck on with spray contact adhesive. The good points are: That it is quite light, only a couple pounds. The underlayment and layers of foam and rubber make it quite impact resistant. Nothing dry seems to stick to the foam. The recessed foam on the bottom keeps it from sliding around on the surface plate, and the drawer liner on the top makes a useful work surface. I have not seen any downside so far...

I cover mine in the box it came in, a heavy triple wall carton. works fine for the past 20 years.

The thread lives on!

I Didn't Use OSB!!!!

i need to transport my surface plates up to member Bob Korves house later today.
Bob made the arrangements to have Standridge Granite to come and resurface our granite surface plates, later this month.:grin::grin:
I'll look forward to the opportunity to meet some new friends too today, there are other participants that are dropping their plates off as well.

as for the covers i made, they were reclaimed from, gifted, reclaimed ,oak cabinetry removed from a neighbors house remodel, and scrap & pallet fir re-sawn.

Very nice covers. I'll be doing the same with my Astral surface plate. I'll be bringing with me on my next work trip to Chicago and bring it back to them to resurface/calibrate. Should be cheap as it is in very good condition. I currently use a thick moving blanket that is folded up to cover the plate. Plan is to use some decent grade of plywood and make sure there is a standoff so it doesn't actually touch. I'll be hunting the endless garage sales around here this summer to pick up a nice soft baby blanket, trim to fit, and hem the new edge to use as a protective cover between the granite and wood cover.
