Bread was the old school way that I first heard of long ago.

The thinner the gap between the back of the “item” and the bottom of the hole, the thinner the viscosity of the medium needs to be.

Yeah, Bread. Cheap white bread, or something similarly over processed and non nutritious. It almost turns back to something like a dough when you get enough pressure on it. Crazy.

Honestly though, at least for me, it was a novelty to see if it really worked. In an environment where you're resorting to actually doing this... Logistically, practically, even accounting for the cleanup, More than likely grease is probably quicker and easier.
