Either one will work. With a steady rest, just center the rest on the part and turn as close to it as you can. Then move the rest over to the machined area and finish what;s left. With a follower rest, you need to turn a short section first to run the rest on, then turn the remainder once the rest is set up. If your rests don't have bearings on the jaws you'll need some graphite grease or anti-seize to lubricate them.
