So I was reading Davids thread http://hobby-machinist.com/index.php?topic=2351.0 and I started checking out Gerstners.
Using http://www.allofcraigs.com/ (pure evil for sucking money out of your wallet) I found a gerstner with tools in NC. Not a bad drive, but not short and the pictures he sent me piqued my interest.
Sunday I went down and picked up a 1961 Gerstner Journeyman in Oak. Age is based on Machinery's Handbook date with the owners name, Christmas, 1961 in it...he would have been early 20's. Owner is still around, but not well and he was using a firm that handled relocation and transition. The chest was in the back of a closet since he had retired.
Here are a couple of cell phone shots. I think I did all right at $350.00
Box with minor condition issues where stickers were on top rail.
Misc stuff
Starrett and Brown and Sharpe
Mitutoyo and Brown and Sharpe
Indicators
Everything above is usually Starrett, Brown and Sharpe or Mitutoyo.
Not shown is a box of lather dogs from teeny tiny to 3-4 inches, endmills, burrs, taps, turning carbide inserts, HSS, boring bars, counter bores (easily 3 dozen from small to 7/8 inch)
Boxed sets of Mitutoyo vernier calipers, depth gauge with 12 rods, 3 micrometers with digital mechanical counters.
And more...like that turn of the century indicator in the last photo....a half dozen cat's eye marbles, a set of tweezer, starrett wiggler, starrett edge finder, rules, on and on...
There is also a bottom box that is matched but home made.
I am going to dedicate one of the drawers to the original owner and keep some of the personal stuff and the name plate there. I am so honored to be able to purchase something like this, not break it up and continue to use it.
Now I have to learn how to use all of the stuff!!!
